Basketball Recap: Sotomayor Extends Winning Streak to Three

Sotomayor waltzed into their game on Wednesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They walked away with a 48-38 win over the Stevens Falcons. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 61-52 back in December of 2024.

Sotomayor's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jasiah Saunders led the charge by going 9 for 19 en route to 22 points and seven boards. Saunders is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 15 or more in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Justin Mcbryde, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 12 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists.

Sotomayor smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Stevens only pulled down five offensive rebounds.

When it comes to explaining why Stevens lost, don't look at Zane Schunior. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 13 en route to 15 points and three steals. That's the most steals Schunior has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Zayth Guerrero, who posted seven points and six boards.

Sotomayor's record now sits at 16-12. As for Stevens, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 13-14.

Sotomayor will square off against Taft at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Sotomayor is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.8 points per game this season. As for Stevens, it'll be a Battle of the Birds when the Stevens Falcons take on the Harlan Hawks at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Stevens also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 55.9 points per game.
