Basketball Game Preview: Gaston Bulldogs vs. Sand Rock Wildcats

Gaston is 0-10 against Sand Rock since January of 2021 but things could change on Friday. The Gaston Bulldogs will challenge the Sand Rock Wildcats at 6:00 p.m.

Last Tuesday, Gaston came up short against Hokes Bluff and fell 39-30. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 329th, while the Eagles are ranked 161st).

Meanwhile, Sand Rock entered their tilt with Ragland on Thursday with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. They claimed a resounding 60-12 win over the Purple Devils. The Wildcats have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five matchups by 30 points or more this season.

Sand Rock's win came from a few key players Gaston will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Molly Grace Lay, who posted 11 points along with five assists and four steals. She has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last ten times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Peyton Johnson, who went 6 of 12 en route to 14 points and three steals.

Sand Rock pushed their record up to 9-2 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.3 points per game. As for Gaston, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.

Gaston took a serious blow against Sand Rock when the teams last played back in February, falling 61-26. Can Gaston avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
