League recap: Girard stuns Fairview in upset

District 10 Region 4 AA recap September 10, 2013

The biggest upset of the week belonged to Girard, who defeated 262nd ranked Fairview, 28-7.

North East scaled the state rankings by moving to 262 from 353 this week, the biggest jump in District 10 Region 4 AA. The Grape Pickers climbed the ranks as a result of beating Corry 35-14.

Ben Kocan and Shannon Jackson gave the Tigers a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week. Kocan threw for 32 yards, while Jackson ran for 119 yards. Teammate Kocan added to the ground attack by rushing for 43 yards.

Nathainel Smith provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Beavers fell to North East. He completed 6 passes for 122 yards and also ran for 28 yards. Smith's key target this week was Liam Cragg, who caught 2 passes for 67 yards.

Jackson was the most successful running back in the league this week.

Kocan put up the best numbers in passing as Jim Brinling's team lost to the Yellowjackets.

Cragg was the best receiver in the league this week as Corry lost to Matt Shesman's team.

Travis Carey's team's Smith and Cragg have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading District 10 Region 4 AA in both passing and receiving yards. 6-4 quarterback Smith has thrown for 265 yards this season, while Cragg has 7 catches for 141 yards. The Tigers' Jackson leads the league in rushing yards with 241.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Girard takes on Northwestern. At the moment, Jim Funk's team is in fourth, while the Wildcats are in first.

The league will see a high scoring game when Fairview and the Beavers face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Tigers comes in having scored 61 this season, while Corry has scored 23. Fairview scored 7 points last week as it fell to the Yellowjackets.

Harbor Creek fell to Fort LeBoeuf 35-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
