Basketball Recap: Edmond Memorial Falls Despite Big Games from Janiyah Williams and Avery Hjelmstad

Edmond Memorial and Broken Arrow squared off in some playoff action on Tuesday, but Edmond Memorial had to settle for second. They received a blow as they fell 72-54 to the Broken Arrow Tigers. The Bulldogs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Edmond Memorial had strong showings from Avery Hjelmstad, who posted 25 points, and Janiyah Williams, who put up 19 points and five boards. Hjelmstad has been hot for a while, having posted 16 or more points the last 15 times she's played.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Broken Arrow to victory, but perhaps none more so than McKenzie Mathurin, who went 8-for-17 on her way to 27 points and seven rebounds. Macy Marraccini was another key player, shooting 4-for-4 from downtown and almost dropping a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

Edmond Memorial's loss dropped their record down to 24-5. As for Broken Arrow, the win was the 12th in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 26-2.

Edmond Memorial does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Broken Arrow, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Broken Arrow Tigers challenge Putnam City North Panthers at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. They will need to watch out since Putnam City North has now posted at least 55 points in their last eight games.
