Basketball Recap: Nelson Island Comes Up Short

After flying high against Ayaprun on Saturday, Nelson Island came back down to earth. The Nelson Island Islanders took a blow against the Chaputnguak Shaman on Saturday, falling 75-46. Unfortunately, that's the fifth time they've come up short against the Shaman this season, with their most recent loss being a 58-39 defeat on Friday.

Several Islanders players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Kelsey Angaiak, who posted 21 points. Angaiak is becoming a predictor of Nelson Island's success: when she posts at least 15 points the team is 3-1 (and 4-7 when she doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Audrey Lincoln, who earned 14 points.

MacKenzie Larsen was her usual excellent self, putting up 31 points for Chaputnguak. The match was Larsen's third in a row with at least 17 points. Another player making a difference was Helen Larsen, who scored 14 points.

Nelson Island now has a losing record of 7-8. As for Chaputnguak, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Chaputnguak beat Nelson Island by a score of 67-43 on Thursday.
