Augustine Ayelyine commands the offense for Christians win

Recap: University Christian Christians vs. Matanzas Pirates

The University Christian Christians posted their biggest win since November 28, 2023 on Saturday. They blew past Matanzas 72-49. Given University Christian's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 179th, while Matanzas is ranked 376th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead University Christian to victory, but perhaps none more so than Augustine Ayelyine, who scored nine points along with 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Karrington Johnson, who scored nine points along with two steals.

Matanzas' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tariq Shakir, who scored 17 points. Rya'sir Jefferson was another key contributor, scoring 13 points along with five assists and two steals.

The victory was the third in a row for University Christian, bringing their record for this year to 6-8. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.3 points per game. As for Matanzas, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-10.

University Christian will square off against Oakleaf at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Oakleaf is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last six games. Matanzas' road trip will continue as they head out to face Davenport at 3:00 p.m. on January 15th. Davenport is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak.
