Volleyball Recap: Montezuma-Cortez Starts Season with Victory Against Monticello

Montezuma-Cortez had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They put the hurt on the Monticello Buckaroo with a sharp 3-0 victory on Friday. The Panthers not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since September 3, 2024 (when they won 3-0).

Montezuma-Cortez was especially dominant in the first set. The match finished with set scores of 25-8, 25-21, 25-18.

Among those leading the charge was Aubrie Matthias, who had eight digs and three aces. Those three aces gave her a new career-high.

They weren't the only good server: Montezuma-Cortez was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 13 aces. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Monticello only served one ace.

When it comes to explaining why Monticello lost, don't look at Marlee Mack. Despite the final result, she had 14 digs and one block. Maron Freestone was another key player, getting five digs and one block.

Monticello's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.

Montezuma-Cortez didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-1 win against Ignacio on the 26th. As for Monticello, they have also already played their next game, a 3-0 victory against Dove Creek on the 28th.
