Basketball Recap: Dunedin Takes a Loss

Dunedin lost against St. Petersburg on January 9th and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Dunedin Falcons took a blow against the St. Petersburg Green Devils, falling 68-29. While losing is never fun, the Falcons can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 397th, while the Green Devils are ranked 148th).

Dunedin's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Trinity Clincy, who posted ten points and three blocks, and Kennedy Brooks, who had five points and 13 boards. Clincy is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 27 games she's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Brook-Lynn Griffey, who put up five points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Dunedin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

It was another big night for Shaw Summer, who dropped a double-double on 39 points and 15 boards for St. Petersburg. Those 39 points gave Summer a new career-high. Ella Abernethy was another key player, going 8 of 16 on her way to 20 points and three steals.

Dunedin's defeat dropped their record down to 7-9. As for St. Petersburg, they pushed their record up to 17-6 with the win, which was their third straight at home.

Dunedin will challenge Angeline Academy of Innovation at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Dunedin is facing Angeline Academy of Innovation at the right time seeing as Angeline Academy of Innovation is stuck on a 17-game losing streak. As for St. Petersburg, they will face off against Palm Harbor University at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. St. Petersburg is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.9 points per game this season.
