Preview: Giddings Lonestar Southeast Mustangs vs. Emery/Weiner

The Giddings Lonestar Southeast Mustangs will head out on the road to face off against Emery/Weiner at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the match red-hot, with Giddings Lonestar Southeast sitting on three straight wins and Emery/Weiner on eight.

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Giddings Lonestar Southeast walked away with it. They beat Texas School for the Deaf on Saturday by the very same score they won with last week: 57-10. The result was nothing new for Giddings Lonestar Southeast, who have now won nine matchups by 31 points or more so far this season.

Meanwhile, Emery/Weiner put the finishing touches on their seventh blowout victory of the season on Saturday. They blew past Incarnate Word Academy 60-8 on the road. Given Emery/Weiner's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 45th, while Incarnate Word Academy is ranked 162nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Emery/Weiner can attribute much of their success to Zac Laviage, who gained 192 total yards and three touchdowns, and Bennett Grossman, who rushed for 84 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Grossman hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for three straight games.

Their wins bumped Giddings Lonestar Southeast to 9-3 and Emery/Weiner to 9-1.

Giddings Lonestar Southeast was dealt a bruising 76-36 defeat at the hands of Emery/Weiner in their previous meeting back in October. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Emery/Weiner's Grossman, who threw for 170 yards and six touchdowns, and also rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Now that Giddings Lonestar Southeast knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
