Softball Recap: Melbourne Find Success

Melbourne won the last time they faced Heritage and things went their way on Monday too. Melbourne's pitcher stepped up to hand Heritage a 19-0 shutout. Considering the Bulldogs have won four matches by more than nine runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

Maddie Fostveldt made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those six strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Layna Ayala and Hailey Cottrill did most of the damage at the plate: Ayala got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Cottrill scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Ayala is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in each of the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Parker Holton, who scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Melbourne always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .743. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Melbourne now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Heritage, their defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-8.

Looking ahead, Melbourne will venture away from home to challenge Spruce Creek at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Heritage, they will host Bayside at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Heritage's pitchers better be ready for this one: Bayside has averaged an impressive 8.5 runs per game this season.
