Softball Recap: University Drops Season-High Score on Samueli Academy

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask University). Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Samueli Academy Firewolves a 25-0 shutout on Wednesday. While the Trojans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Maiko Shiraiwa was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of her six plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. She also put up a double, which was her first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sophia Weinberg, who scored five runs and stole a base while getting on base in all six of her plate appearances. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jessica Hu, who scored a run while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

University always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .771. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Samueli Academy only posted an OBP of .167.

The win made it two in a row for University and bumps their season record up to 4-1. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.5 runs over those games. As for Samueli Academy, they dropped their record down to 1-6 with the loss, which was their fifth straight at home.

University has already played their next game, a 12-0 win against Godinez Fundamental on the 20th. As for Samueli Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next match, a 20-4 defeat against Glenn on the 21st.
