Recap: Desert Christian Eagles vs. St. Augustine Catholic Wolves
The Desert Christian Eagles have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five games by 21 points or more this season. They put the hurt on St. Augustine Catholic with a sharp 74-53 victory on Tuesday. The win was just what Desert Christian needed coming off of a 84-60 defeat in their prior contest.
Leading Desert Christian to victory were Jonathan Brown and Tyson Dobbins. Brown scored 22 points along with eight rebounds, while Dobbins almost dropped a triple-double on 23 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Dobbins has scored at least 25% of Desert Christian's points. Joseph Serrano was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with three steals.
St. Augustine Catholic lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Lance Marchessault, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 13 rebounds. Marchessault has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Peter Dogbegah, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Desert Christian pushed their record up to 9-3 with that win, which was their third straight at home. They've been dominating during the matches in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 30.67 points. As for St. Augustine Catholic, their loss dropped their record down to 7-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Desert Christian will challenge Valley Union at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Valley Union will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 269th, while Desert Christian is ranked 121st). St. Augustine Catholic will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Santa Cruz Valley at 7:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024. Hopefully Santa Cruz Valley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Wednesday.
