Basketball Recap: Screven County Gamecocks vs. First Preparatory Christian Academy Highlanders
Screven County unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They took an 80-64 bruising from the First Preparatory Christian Academy Highlanders on Tuesday. The Gamecocks were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Highlanders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2024.
Screven County lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Rodney Beckworth, who posted 25 points. LeVez Roper was another key player, putting up 17 points.
Leading First Preparatory Christian Academy to victory were Malachi Furlow and DeVeon Clarke. Furlow shot 53% from the field on his way to 33 points, while Clarke went 8-for-13 en route to 21 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Those 33 points gave Furlow a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jace Reid, who scored eight points and eight boards.
Looking ahead, Screven County will venture away from home to challenge Glenn Hills at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for First Preparatory Christian Academy, they will welcome Islands at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
