Baseball Game Preview: Weed Cougars vs. Fall River Bulldogs

Weed and Fall River are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Cougars will host the Bulldogs at 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Weed is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8 runs per game this season.

On Friday, Weed made easy work of Trinity and carried off a 17-5 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cougars in their matchups with the Wolves: they've now won four in a row.

Conner Hosino made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. He is becoming a predictor of Weed's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 6-9 when he doesn't). Hosino was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one home run.

In other batting news, Jett Marshall was a standout: he went 2-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jackson Keen, who went 2-for-5 with one home run and four RBI.

Weed was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .414. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Fall River came up short against Etna on Friday, falling 15-1. The Bulldogs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Fall River's loss dropped their record down to 2-15. As for Weed, the victory got them back to even at 9-9.

Everything went Weed's way against Fall River in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Weed made off with a 20-12 win. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Bulldogs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
