Basketball Recap: Blake Extends Winning Streak to Five

Blake waltzed into their contest on Friday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They took down the Wharton Wildcats 53-36. Given the Yellow Jackets' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while the Wildcats are ranked 130th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Blake to victory, but perhaps none more so than Joe Philon, who posted 11 points along with five rebounds and three blocks. Philon has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Joshua Lewis, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 boards.

Blake was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Wharton only racked up four assists.

Wharton lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Tysen Jefferson, who went 5 for 12 on his way to 16 points. Jayson Montgomery was another key player, putting up eight points.

Blake is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 20-3 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 34.3% in those games and 27% outside of them. As for Wharton, with the loss, they broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 20-5.

Blake didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 70-62 defeat against Oak Ridge on the 1st. As for Wharton, they will welcome Sunlake at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Wharton is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.2 points per game this season.
