Softball Recap: Glendale Comes Up Short

Independence hit Glendale with a five-run fourth inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Cardinals fell just short of the Patriots by a score of 10-9. The loss continues a trend for the Cardinals in their meetings with the Patriots: they've now lost four in a row.

Janessa Gabaldon Lucero spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and seven unearned) runs on six hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Unique Medina led a balanced group of hitters, going 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Reeanah Sesma, who went 4-for-5 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Glendale's defeat dropped their record down to 7-9. As for Independence, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-3.

Coming up, Glendale will be playing in front of their home fans against Mohave at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Independence, they will challenge Sierra Linda at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.31 runs per game on average), something the Patriots will no doubt try to take advantage of.
