The Warhill Lions will head out on the road to face off against the York Falcons at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Warhill is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12 runs per game this season.
Warhill proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by six) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past New Kent 5-3.
Skyler Wilson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on eight hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Payton Auerbach - GMU, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, York waltzed into their match on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They blew past the Clippers 10-2. Considering the Falcons have won five games by more than seven runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Sarah Witt made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off ten hits. Witt was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Leslee Maldonado was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Maldonado is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. Karley Estrada also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
York was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in five consecutive contests.
York pushed their record up to 5-3 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Warhill, their record is now 8-2.
York's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Warhill has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for York, though, as they've been averaging only 3.4 strikeouts. Will Warhill keep running through batters, or will the Falcons buck the trend?
Warhill took their win against York in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
