Football Preview: Durant Cougars vs. Wharton Wildcats

The Durant Cougars are taking a road trip to square off against the Wharton Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Given that both suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.

Durant will head into Friday's game ready to turn things around: they lost a close one when they played last Friday but unfortunately for them the defeat they were handed on Friday was a bit more commanding. They had to suffer through a 35-0 loss at the hands of Armwood. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida football rankings (they are ranked 69th, while the Hawks are ranked ninth).

Even if they lost, Durant's defensive line still kept up the pressure with three sacks. Hunter Smith was especially locked on to Armwood's QB and sacked him twice. Smith is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in the last ten games he's played dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Wharton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 46-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of Robinson. The contest was a 21-21 toss-up at halftime, but the Wildcats couldn't quite close it out.

Despite the defeat, Wharton got top-tier performance from Duke Corley, who rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns on only 19 passes. Trevon Garden was another key player, picking up 160 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

This is the second loss in a row for Durant and nudges their season record down to 2-2. As for Wharton, their loss dropped their record down to 1-3.
