Football Recap: Javon Anderson Leads Gulfport's Defense on Friday

Gulfport had won three straight on the road, but on Friday they bumped up to 3-2 to make it four. They came out on top against the Ocean Springs Greyhounds by a score of 41-28. This was payback for the Admirals, who suffered a 20-3 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Cooper Crosby produced another solid effort rushing for 160 yards and five TDs, while also picking up 42 receiving yards. Thanks to that big game, he is now up to 12 rushing touchdowns on the season. Mylan Stubbs did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 92 receiving yards.

Gulfport didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Ocean Springs to a completion percentage of just 47.8%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Tyrell Seals and Pierre Felder, who each logged two passes deflected. The last time Gulfport's completion percentage was this high was back in October of 2024.

Gulfport's defense didn't let Chalmers Berglind, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. Javon Anderson was especially locked on to Ocean Springs' QB and sacked him 2.5 times. Gulfport received some extra help from Anderson, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Having lost for the first time this season, Ocean Springs fell to 5-1. Greyhounds fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team has lost against Gulfport since Friday.

Despite the loss, Ocean Springs still got an impressive performance from Solomon Baggett, who rushed for 230 yards and a pair of scores on only 14 carries. Baggett really tore up the turf during one magnificent 80-yard run.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Gulfport will venture away from home to square off against West Harrison at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. That matchup will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Crosby and Jordan Stapleton. As for Ocean Springs, they will head out to challenge D'Iberville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors' defense has only allowed 11.8 points per game this season, so the Greyhounds' offense will have their work cut out for them.
