3A District 5 recap Nov. 7, 2012
Clearwater Central Catholic extended the longest winning streak in 3A District 5 this week by beating St. Petersburg Catholic, 56-0. This was the team's eighth consecutive win.
Clearwater Central Catholic led the league in scoring this week after putting up 56 points on the Barons. Blake Gomez threw for 92 yards and one touchdown and ran for 21 yards in the win.
Bubba Olivera was the best wideout in the league this week as Berkeley Prep fell to Tampa Catholic. Olivera tallied five receptions for 60 yards. Jacob Mathis helped Berkeley Prep's passing attack out by catching one ball for 14 yards.
Brad Mayes provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Buccaneers lost to the Crusaders. He completed eight passes for 95 yards and also ran for 59 yards.
Diquan Walker was the most productive running back in 3A District 5 this week. He ran for 109 yards on 11 carries as John Davis' team fell to Tampa Catholic. Eric Davis also contributed to the rushing game with 45 yards on the ground.
Berkeley Prep's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Buccaneers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Mayes has thrown for 1126 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, while Olivera has 26 catches for 627 yards. Chris Williams leads the league in rushing with 962 yards.
Dominick Ciao's team's Williams is a mere 38 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.
St. Petersburg Catholic made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 8,468 from 8,660. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 56-0 victory over Steve Dudley's team last week.
