Basketball Recap: Avery Houseton's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Covenant Day over Charlotte Country Day School

If Covenant Day was riding high fresh off their 59-10 takedown of South Charlotte last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Covenant Day Lions took a hard 60-43 fall against the Charlotte Country Day School Buccaneers on Thursday. The Lions were not able to make up for their defeat to the Buccaneers from their previous meeting back in February of 2023.

Covenant Day lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Avery Houseton, who went 5 of 9 en route to 13 points and five assists. Taryn Van Der Schaaf was another key player, putting up eight points.

Charlotte Country Day School's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Sam Vanderhave, who went 7 for 15 on her way to 18 points along with seven assists and six rebounds. That's the most assists Vanderhave has posted since back in November of 2023. Another player making a difference was Olive Bigham, who went 8 of 17 en route to 17 points and six assists.

Covenant Day's loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 13-8. The slump could be explained by some tough opposition over that stretch, namely Charlotte Country Day School, Cannon, and Providence Day. As for Charlotte Country Day School, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 17-6.

Covenant Day didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 50-23 defeat against Providence Day on the 24th. Charlotte Country Day School has also already played their next contest, a 76-47 loss against Cannon on the 24th.
