Baseball Recap: Sylmar Extends Home Winning Streak to 19

Sylmar waltzed into their matchup on Monday with three straight wins... but they left with four. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Verdugo Hills Dons an 11-0 shutout. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by eight runs or more this season.

Alex Martinez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits over five innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Rickee Luevano and Timothy Sepulveda did most of the damage at the plate: Luevano went 1-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Sepulveda went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run and two runs. Those three hits gave Sepulveda a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Torres, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Sylmar always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .520. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Verdugo Hills only posted an OBP of .067.

Sylmar pushed their record up to 15-4 with the win, which was their 19th straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.7 runs on average this season. As for Verdugo Hills, their loss dropped their record down to 8-13.

Looking ahead, Sylmar will square off against South East at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. Verdugo Hills will be paying especially close attention to the Spartans' contest: after the Spartans face off against the Jaguars, they'll take on Verdugo Hills again at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
