Football Recap: Isabelle Ambriz and Sarah Briones Pace Rio Mesa Defense

Rio Mesa was the 52-6 winner over Buena when they last played one another back in September of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Spartans took a 20-13 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, Rio Mesa still got an impressive performance from Sophia Ramirez, who picked up 24 receiving yards and two scores.

Rio Mesa didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Isabelle Ambriz and Sarah Briones. Another thorn in Buena's side was Saniya Holloway, who made nine total tackles (1.0 for loss) and defended one pass.

Rio Mesa's loss was their fifth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 6-9. As for Buena, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-6.

Looking ahead, Rio Mesa will head out to take on Ventura at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Spartans will need to watch out since the Cougars have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season. As for Buena, they will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Oxnard at 6:30 p.m. The Bulldogs' defense better be ready for this one: the Yellowjackets have averaged an impressive 28.3 points per game this season.
