Softball Game Preview: Nokomis Redskins vs. Father McGivney Catholic Griffins

The Nokomis Redskins will challenge the Father McGivney Catholic Griffins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Nokomis will be strutting in after a win while Father McGivney Catholic will be coming in after a defeat.

Nokomis was handed a nine-run loss in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Lincolnwood 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Redskins have posted since March 24th.

Jayde Gonet spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 13 Ks.

At the plate, Nokomis saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Faith Morrison, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Maddison DeWerff also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Father McGivney Catholic was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They lost 12-1 to Hillsboro.

Nokomis' victory ended a five-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-14. As for Father McGivney Catholic, their loss dropped their record down to 7-12.

Nokomis took their win against Father McGivney Catholic in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 14-7 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Redskins since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
