Basketball Game Preview: Don Lugo Conquistadores vs. Ayala Bulldogs

Don Lugo hasn't had much luck against Ayala recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Don Lugo Conquistadores will venture away from home to take on the Ayala Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Don Lugo is headed into Monday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 11th straight game dating back to last season on Saturday. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 71-67 heartbreaker at the hands of Covina. One positive for the Conquistadores, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.

Meanwhile, Ayala came tearing into Saturday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They escaped with a win against the Cougars by the margin of a single free throw, 59-58. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 104th, while the Cougars are ranked 290th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Ayala's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-2. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 69.7 points per game. As for Don Lugo, their loss dropped their record down to 0-10.

Don Lugo came up short against Ayala in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, falling 63-59. Can Don Lugo avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
