It's a cautious step backward, but Louisiana still plans to get its high school athletes training before the first day of summer.

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association voted unanimously this week to push back summer workouts to June 8 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Football workouts and other conditioning originally were set to return Sunday to coincide with Gov. John Bel Edwards' Phase 1 plan to reopen the state.

But the LHSAA decided more time was needed and now the workout return will coincide with Phase 2 of Edwards' reopening. Workouts can include groups as large as 25 student-athletes.

Last week, Indiana became the first in the country to announce a return to summer activities, but the Hoosier State won't return until July 1.
