Softball Recap: Horizon Gets the Win

It's playoff time, and Horizon had no trouble coming through when it counted. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Tate Aggies 8-6. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Hawks as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Mackenzie Duncan made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Duncan wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Morgyn Welch, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most runs Welch has posted since back in April. Brooke Grafton was another, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

Horizon's victory bumped their record up to 21-6. As for Tate, their defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 8-15.

Looking ahead, Horizon will take on Navarre at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Raiders have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. Tate does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
