Softball Game Preview: Lancaster Tigers vs. Spruce Timberwolves

The Lancaster Tigers will square off against the Spruce Timberwolves at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Lancaster has three straight victories, Spruce has seven straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

If Lancaster beats Spruce with 15 runs on Saturday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. Lancaster's pitcher stepped up to hand Wyatt a 15-0 shutout on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won 13 contests by nine runs or more so far this season.

Sophia Zuniga was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two hits in nine consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, Tatiana Price was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1. She is also on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now stole at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Kelsea Patton, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-1.

Lancaster always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .842. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .600 or higher in 12 consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Spruce fell victim to Lincoln and their airtight pitching crew last Friday. They lost 8-0 to the Tigers.

Lancaster's win bumped their record up to 13-1. As for Spruce, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-2.

Lancaster was able to grind out a solid victory over Spruce in their previous matchup back in April of 2022, winning 13-10. Does Lancaster have another victory up their sleeve, or will Spruce turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
