Football Recap: Hays Hawks vs. Elgin Wildcats
Hays had to kick off their season on the road on Friday, but they showed no ill effects. They came out on top against the Elgin Wildcats by a score of 31-21.
Anthony Hernandez was a one-man wrecking crew for Hays as he rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns.
Hays wouldn't let Elgin keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force two fumbles. Hays can thank Alex Silva and Robert Braitkrus for forcing both of them. Braitkrus' also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, forcing a fumble and making eight total tackles (1.0 for loss). Hays got some further help from Lynford Noriega: he picked up two sacks, made eight total tackles (2.0 for loss), and defended two passes.
Elgin's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Dylan Owens, who rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown, and also threw for 145 yards and a touchdown. A healthy portion of that aerial production (84 yards to be exact) went to Jalen Owens, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Hays will challenge Pflugerville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Elgin, they will square off against Anderson at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Elgin focused on turnovers this week as team gave up four on Friday.
