Irish Keep Diggins in South Bend

Hoosier State sensation Skylar Diggins elects to stay in hometown and play for Notre Dame.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. Skylar Diggins, the nation’s No. 1 ranked guard, signed a national letter-of-intent Wednesday night with the University of Notre Dame.

 

The 5-foot-10 senior superstar elected to stay at home so family and friends could continue to follow her outstanding career. Notre Dame actually offered her a scholarship before she played her first varsity game as a freshman.

 

Diggins, who also considered Stanford and Penn State, led the state of Indiana in scoring as a junior with a 29.7 average. She has 2,054 career points – 19th in Indiana history – with most of her senior year yet to be played. She also has sparked the Panthers to a 77-6 record, which includes one Class 4A state title and two runner-up finishes.

 

She follows in the footsteps of former Washington star Jacqueline Batteast, who also played for Notre Dame, spent some time in the WNBA and now is the Panthers’ freshman coach.
