Softball Game Preview: Middleton Cardinals vs. Sun Prairie East Cardinals

Middleton is 0-3 against Sun Prairie East since April of 2024 but things could change on Thursday. Middleton will be playing at home against Sun Prairie East at 5:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Middleton 3, Sun Prairie East 3.5) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Sun Prairie East will take on a team with plenty of momentum: Middleton extended their winning streak to three on Wednesday. The Cardinals never let Janesville Craig get on the board and left with a 15-0 win. The Cardinals might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won three contests by 11 runs or more this season.

The result came thanks to Megan Button's shutout, as she gave up just two hits and racked up 11 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Maggie Zumbrunnen, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Hailey Stroede was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-5.

Middleton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in three consecutive matches.

Meanwhile, after some red-hot attacks at the plate in their last three games, Sun Prairie East finally came back down to earth on Wednesday. They fell 5-0 to Hamilton. The loss was the Cardinals' first of the season.

Sun Prairie East also got a good showing from Lillyanna Gross, who didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched.

At the plate, Sun Prairie East saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Abby Packard, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

Having lost for the first time this season, Sun Prairie East fell to 3-1. As for Middleton, their victory bumped their record up to 5-1.
