Baseball Recap: Dayton Comes Up Short

Dayton had lost seven straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 10-13 to make it eight. They came up short against the Lowry Buckaroos, falling 17-2. Having soared to a lofty 19 runs in the game before, the Dust Devils couldn't push the score so high this time.

Dayton saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kadyn Clifford, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base and one double.

As for Lowry, the victory snapped their losing streak at five games and leaves them with a 11-13 record. Considering they have won eight matches by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

On Lowry's side, ReiCyan Grau was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and only one walk). Lowry is 2-1 when Grau allows one or fewer earned runs, but 9-12 otherwise. Grau was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Erick Valencia was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Lowry's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 7-3 (and 4-10 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Casalez, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.

While Dayton had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
