Basketball Recap: Tamalpais Takes a Loss

Tamalpais was the 74-65 winner over San Marin when they last played one another back in January of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Tamalpais Red Tailed Hawks took a 65-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of the San Marin Mustangs on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Red Tailed Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 783rd, while the Mustangs are ranked 285th).

When it comes to explaining why Tamalpais lost, don't look at Porthos Oliveira. Despite the final result, he posted 24 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Newmeyer, who earned 14 points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead San Marin to victory, but perhaps none more so than J.D. Rhodes, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine assists. What's more, Rhodes also racked up seven boards, the most he's had since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Grant Means, who had 16 points in addition to eight boards and five assists.

Tamalpais has traveled a rocky road recently having lost eight of their last nine matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season. As for San Marin, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-5.

Tamalpais will head out to take on Terra Linda at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Terra Linda has three straight wins, Tamalpais has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court. As for San Marin, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 52-44 defeat against Rancho Cotate on the 11th.
