League recap: Sandlin breaks off league-leading run for Stigler

3A District 8 recap October 22, 2013

Stigler's Seth Sandlin recorded the longest rushing play in 3A District 8 this season in his game against Checotah last week. Sandlin scampered for 86 yards on the play and finished with 207 on the day as his team defeated the Wildcats.

Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Spiro beat Heavener 35-7. The victory was the sixth in a row for the team.

Sandlin provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Stigler beat Checotah. He completed 13 passes for 110 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 207 yards. Sandlin's favorite target this week was Blaine Thompson, who caught 4 passes for 58 yards.

Ty Mitchell made the biggest impact on defense this week as Chris Risenhoover's team bested Brandon Turley's team. The 5-foot-9 senior nabbed 1 interception.

Manuel Bunch put up the best numbers in passing as Roland defeated Idabel. He finished with a total of 9 completions for 171 yards and 1 touchdown. Bunch's favorite target this week was Madison Bunch, who caught 4 passes for 95 yards.

The Panthers' Sandlin is a mere 71 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. Sandlin has rushed for 929 yards on 148 carries so far this year.

One of the league's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when Stigler and Heavener face off next week. Sandlin has thrown for 1,401 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, while Luke McGee has terrorized opposing QBs to the tune of 4.0 sacks.

A big matchup in 3A District 8 this week will be when Spiro takes on Valliant. The Bulldogs are currently in first, while the Bulldogs are in seventh.

Eufaula made the biggest leap in the national rankings this week, rising to 6,422 from 6,881. The improvement was largely due to a 54-7 victory over Valliant last week.
