Baseball Recap: Gretna Takes a Loss

Gretna had lost four straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 2-10 to make it five. They fell just short of the Appomattox County Raiders by a score of 4-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Raiders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-0 back in April.

Gretna saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jay Dalton, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That double was Dalton's first of the season.

As for Appomattox County, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.9 runs over those games.

On Appomattox County's side, Isaac Records spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks. Records has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Caid Burch was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Owen Chavis was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gretna will venture away from home to challenge Liberty at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Minutemen have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.85 runs per game on average), something the Hawks will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Appomattox County, they are taking a road trip to square off against Altavista at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
