Softball Recap: Yorktown Takes Down New Castle in a Playoff Battle

Yorktown had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the New Castle Trojans a 22-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Tigers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matches by nine runs or more this season.

Olivia Jones made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Yorktown got a massive performance out of Claire Hazen, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave Hazen a new career-high. Emma Reynolds was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.

Yorktown always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .649. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New Castle only posted an OBP of .250.

The win was the fifth in a row for Yorktown, bringing their record up to 18-4. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.4 runs over those games. As for New Castle, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-12 record this season.

Yorktown will square off against Connersville at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Spartans have averaged an impressive 8.4 runs per game this season. New Castle does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
