Softball Game Preview: Baker Gators vs. Freeport Bulldogs

After both having extra time off, the Baker Gators and the Freeport Bulldogs will dust off their jerseys to challenge one another at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Baker is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.6 runs per game this season.

Thursday just wasn't the day for Baker's offense. They came up short against Northview last Thursday, falling 12-0. The matchup marked the first time this year in which the Gators were not able to get on the board.

Freeport not only won last Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 1, 2024. They put the hurt on Vernon with a sharp 21-11 victory. The Bulldogs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Annsleigh Withey and Kaylee Worrell did most of the damage at the plate: Withey scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances, while Worrell got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and three RBI. Withey also put up a home run, which was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kayla Stephens, who scored three runs while going 3-for-5.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Freeport lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in March of 2024.

Freeport's win bumped their record up to 3-5. As for Baker, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-3.

Monday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Baker has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .473. However, it's not like Freeport struggles in that department as they've averaged .458. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Baker took their victory against Freeport in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 10-4. Does Baker have another victory up their sleeve, or will Freeport turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
