League recap: Verkuehlen races to league-leading run for Larimore

A Region 2 recap October 8, 2013

Larimore's Royce Verkuehlen rumbled for the longest rushing play in A Region 2 this season in his game against Midway/Minto last week. Verkuehlen's team bested the Mustangs as he sprinted for 70 yards on the play and finished with 194 in all.

Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, North Prairie co-op [Rolette/Wolford/Rolla] beat Park River/Fordville-Lankin 14-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.

Verkuehlen provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Larimore topped Midway/Minto.

Brody Wagner was a key player and the best on defense this week as Paul Peterson's team beat Adam Fortwengler's team. The 5-foot-10 freshman recorded 2 fumbles.

Verkuehlen was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 194 yards on 13 carries as the Polar Bears lost to the Polar Bears. Keith Kawski also contributed to the rushing game with 37 yards on the ground.

Larimore's Blake Yahna and Jake Peterson led A Region 2 in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Yahna has thrown for 186 yards this season, while Peterson has 7 catches for 94 yards. Kyle Becker from Midway/Minto leads the league in rushing with 458 yards.

The Polar Bears are in first place, while Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg is in fourth place.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Larimore takes on the Patriots. The Polar Bears have allowed 57 points this season, while Mayville-Portland-Clifford-Galesburg has given up 89. Larimore allowed 0 points last week as it topped the Mustangs.

Midway/Minto lost to the Polar Bears 40-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Becker was a bright spot for the Mustangs, as he threw for 37 yards and ran for 43 yards in the defeat.
