Softball Recap: Wayland-Cohocton's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Thursday

Wayland-Cohocton dropped their record down to 14-2 on Thursday, which also ended the team's ten-game streak of wins. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Haverling Rams. The Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Rams earlier this season, when they won 2-1.

As for Haverling, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-3. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games.

For Haverling's part, Kaili Witherell was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. Witherell has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple and one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Ryleigh Laverty, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits she has posted over her last seven matchups. Abigail Whaley was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Wayland-Cohocton and Haverling should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps New York Rankings. The Eagles (ranked 66th) will meet Warsaw (ranked 421st) at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Haverling will take on Victor at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with a big rank advantage (125 vs. 283).
