Basketball Recap: Winthrop College Prep Academy Comes Up Short

After flying high against Patel last Monday, Winthrop College Prep Academy came back down to earth. The Winthrop College Prep Academy Spartans fell 45-35 to the Four Corners Coyotes on Wednesday. The Spartans lost against the Coyotes in their previous head to head back in November of 2021, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 48-16 score last time.

When it comes to explaining why Winthrop College Prep Academy lost, don't look at JoLesa Birkhead. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 28 points and nine steals. Birkhead has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played.

Even though they lost, Winthrop College Prep Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Four Corners got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Briana Carrion out in front who dropped a double-double on ten points and 18 boards. Those 18 rebounds gave Carrion a new career-high. Lauren Jorda was another key player, putting up nine points along with six boards and five steals.

Winthrop College Prep Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 7-17. As for Four Corners, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a massive bump to their 8-8 record this season.

Winthrop College Prep Academy and Four Corners could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings. Winthrop College Prep Academy (ranked 464th) will meet Tampa Catholic (ranked 69th) on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Four Corners will challenge Jordan Christian Prep at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday down 196 places (353 vs. 157).
