Softball Recap: Cibola Now 8-1 over Last Nine Games

It's playoff time, and Cibola had no trouble coming through when it counted. They walked away with a 5-1 victory over the Alamogordo Tigers on Saturday. For the Cougars, this counts as revenge for the 8-4 win the Tigers walked away with the last time they faced one another back in May of 2024.

Gabrielle Moncada spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Cibola saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Athena Joyce, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Cibola is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Alamogordo, the loss snapped their winning streak at six games and leaves them with a 18-10 record.

Cibola and Alamogordo are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Cougars will face off against La Cueva at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. The Bears will roll in looking for their 21st straight win, something Cibola surely won't give up without a fight. As for Alamogordo, they will challenge Las Cruces at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bulldawgs have averaged an impressive 6.4 runs per game this season.
