Preview: Walnut Mustangs vs. St. Monica Mariners
Walnut is on a three-game streak of home wins, while St. Monica is on a six-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Walnut Mustangs will take on the St. Monica Mariners at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. After both teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one won't be so lucky.
It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Walnut had no problem doing just that on Friday. Everything went their way against the Cardinals as they made off with a 38-13 victory. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 28-7.
Walnut had a senior duo take command as Noah Covarrubias threw for 218 yards and three touchdowns while completing 78.9% of his passes and Demetrius Stampley rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries. Stampley was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 52 yards.
Meanwhile, St. Monica stacked a seventh blowout onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They put the hurt on Desert Hot Springs with a sharp 29-7 victory.
Walnut is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a massive bump to their 7-6 record this season. As for St. Monica, their win bumped their record up to 10-3.
