Softball Recap: Eastern Takes a Loss

Eastern extended their losing streak to six on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 4-13 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 2-0 heartbreaker at the hands of the Egg Harbor Township Eagles. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Vikings of the 6-2 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2023.

As for Egg Harbor Township, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-12. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games.

For Egg Harbor Township's part, not much got past Gabi Jones, who gave up just three hits and racked up nine Ks to keep Eastern off the board. Jones has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Egg Harbor Township saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Laura Mack, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Mack has hit this season. Another was Kaci Velardi, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Looking ahead, Eastern will face off against Cherokee at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Chiefs' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Vikings' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Egg Harbor Township does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
