After both having extra time off, the Evergreen Cougars and the Northfield Nighthawks will shake off the cobwebs and challenge one another at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Given that both suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this match.
Evergreen's tournament run continued when they took on Bear Creek last Saturday. The contest between Evergreen and Bear Creek didn't end well, with Evergreen falling 53-36. The Cougars have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Elle Buenning, who posted 11 points along with six rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Addie McEvers, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 11 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Evergreen smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bear Creek only pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Meanwhile, Northfield came up short against Mead two weeks ago and fell 55-47. While losing is never fun, the Nighthawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 91st, while the Mavericks are ranked sixth).
Evergreen will have to keep a close watch on LaPorsha Allen and Aliyah Herron, a pair of players who had a big impact on Northfield's prior game. Allen earned 14 points and eight rebounds, while Herron had ten points and four steals. Another player making a difference was Kate Snodgrass, who posted three points and six blocks.
Evergreen now has a losing record at 4-5. As for Northfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-4.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Evergreen has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 26.4 boards per game. However, it's not like Northfield struggles in that department as they've been averaging 27.5 rebounds.
