Baseball Recap: Gates County Find Success

Gates County came out on top against Northeastern on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run fifth inning. The Red Barons took their contest against the Eagles 11-6. The win continues a trend for the Red Barons in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won three in a row.

Nolan Miller made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in both of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Tyler Cabral and Justin Powell did most of the damage at the plate: Cabral went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Powell went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Cabral is becoming a predictor of Gates County's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 2-1 (and 5-10 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Sean Rountree, who went 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Gates County's record now sits at 7-11. As for Northeastern, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-13.

Gates County has already played their next match, an 11-1 defeat against Perquimans on the 21st. As for Northeastern, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next game, a 10-4 victory against Pasquotank County on the 21st.
