Copper Hills is preparing for their first region matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will host the Corner Canyon Chargers at 3:30 p.m. Copper Hills is coming into the match on a six-game losing streak.
Copper Hills managed to slip by Lone Peak the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Grizzlies came up short against the Knights last Wednesday, falling 11-4.
Copper Hills saw eight different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Trevor Nay, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double. Sam Stringam also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, while Corner Canyon put up plenty of runs on Friday, the same can't be said for Ogden. The Chargers blew past the Tigers 19-0.
Lincoln Eure made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for Corner Canyon: the team is undefeated when he allows at most one hit, but 3-4 otherwise. Eure was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
In other pitching news, Dallon Stokes looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Corner Canyon is undefeated when Stokes allows one or fewer earned runs, but 3-4 otherwise.
Back at the plate, Garrett Downing was a standout: he went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, four RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Horstmann, who scored three runs while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances.
Corner Canyon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in seven consecutive contests.
Copper Hills' loss dropped their record down to 2-8. As for Corner Canyon, their win bumped their record up to 6-4.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Copper Hills has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Corner Canyon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Copper Hills might still be hurting after the 12-6 defeat they got from Corner Canyon in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Can the Grizzlies avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
