Baseball Recap: Highlands Victorious

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Brackenridge, Highlands was happy to have turned things around on Saturday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Sam Houston Hurricanes a 13-0 shutout. The victory continues a trend for the Owls in their matchups with the Hurricanes: they've now won seven in a row.

Zaydin Rivera made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Jaime Zendejas and Jose Villasenor did most of the damage at the plate: Zendejas went 2-for-3 with two triples, three RBI, and two runs, while Villasenor scored two runs while going 3-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Villasenor a new career-high in RBI (three). Another player making a difference was Jose Parga, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.

Highlands always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Highlands' win bumped their record up to 3-11-1. As for Sam Houston, they are on a 36-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-10.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Highlands will take on rival Edison at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Sam Houston is set to challenge their familiar foe Jefferson at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
