MaxPreps Top 100 baseball seniors of the 2013 season

By Kevin Askeland Feb 28, 2013, 12:00am

A whole lot of names that you are likely to see in the upcoming Major League Draft.

The town of Loganville, Ga., accounts for the top two players in the Class of 2013, but the traditional power states of Texas, Florida and California make up nearly half of the MaxPreps Top 100 Seniors list.

Clint Frazier of Loganville (Ga.) and Austin Meadows of Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) top the list of seniors, which is based on draft potential, preseason recognition, summer all-star games and showcases, high school awards and statistics. Both are outfielders and have been tabbed to go among the top 10 players in the 2013 MLB Draft.

The rest of the list, however, is dominated by California, Texas and Florida. California has the most entrants on the list with 18, including No. 3 Dominic Smith of Serra (Gardena) and J.P. Crawford of Lakewood. Florida is second with 15 selections, led by No. 9 Oscar Mercado of Gaither. Texas has 12 players on the list, headed by No. 6 Kohl Stewart of St. Pius X (Houston).

Georgia, with eight players, is the only other state with more three players on the list.

Local Quote: Jarrett Guthrie, Freelance (@JGuthrieTAMPA)
"Mercado is every baseball cliché rolled into one – in a very good way. He’s a ‘first to arrive, last to leave’ guy, he’s a ‘vocal leader’ guy, a ‘lead by example’ guy, he’s a coach’s dream before you even get to the talent. From there, he can hit, field, throw, run and with a little more power development, he could easily wear the ‘five-tool’ label."

10. Rob Kaminsky, St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, N.J.)

Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Ryan Aber, The Oklahoman (@ryaber)
"He suffered a bit offensively early last season as he worked to regain his strength following an off-season injury, but Denney finished strong at the plate. That doesn't matter, though, as much as his work behind the plate. His pop time is unreal, though, checking in at about 1.65 seconds. The way he works behind the plate has many thinking he could be the best player Yukon has ever produced. That's high praise for a team that just four years ago had a player drafted No. 18 overall."

13. Ryan Boldt, Red Wing (Minn.)

Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Perfect Game Classic All-American; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Phil Bowman, Charleston Post and Courier (@PandCPhil)
"At the time, Nick was believed to be first player in history to be offered a baseball scholarship from a major program before he played a varsity game. When he was 14, he split time with (current South Carolina catcher and 2012 freshman All-American) Grayson Greiner on the Diamond Devils U-17 Team."

Local Quote: John Maffei, U-T San Diego
"I spoke with (former Padres closer) Trevor Hoffman recently — his boy is a freshman at Cathedral Catholic — and he said from what he has seen, Gonsalves is a mid-to-late first rounder."

22. Brett Morales, King (Tampa, Fla.)
RHP/3B, 6-2, 185, R/R, Florida
Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Perfect Game Classic All-American; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Jarrett Guthrie, Freelance (@JGuthrieTAMPA)
"Morales had a good junior season, going 6-1 with a 0.99 ERA, but he was brought along slowly. This summer he was turned loose and showed tremendous growth in Perfect Game and Under Armour appearances, turning a lot of heads. He’s a scout-pleaser because he’s showed so much improvement and he seems to still have a lot of room to continue his development. He’s big, durable and athletic, playing third base and hitting in the middle of King’s lineup when not pitching."

23. Travis Demeritte, Winder-Barrow (Winder, Ga.)

Accomplishments:
Perfect Game Classic All-American; Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; MaxPreps 2012 Underclass All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Joe Davidson, Sacramento Bee (@SacBee_JoeD)
"Rowdy's real name is Ryan, but he goes by Rowdy because he was all that as a little child, and now check out his ability to ransack teams as a slugger. When he hit a home run in the rain that landed over the right-field berm at Raley Field, you knew for certain this guy was a monster talent. Who hits home runs that far? In high school? Tellez has a great swing and work ethic. He's the most feared power hitter in Northern California and every bit worth the hype and worth watching."

Accomplishments:
Perfect Game Classic All-American; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Dennis Maffezzoli, Sarasota Herald-Tribune (@maffsports)
"Sandberg is a superior defender in center field, covering plenty of ground in the gaps, and can come in and go back on balls gracefully. At the plate, he can hit for power, and he has speed when he gets on the bases. A five-tool player if there was one in high school."

28. Terry McClure, Riverwood (Atlanta)
OF, 6-2, 190, R/R, Georgia Tech
Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: David Rawnsley, Perfect Game (@DavidRawnsleyPG)
"He's a dynamic athlete, one of the best athletes in the 2013 class. He has the kind of speed and quickness that can stay in center field at the professional level. He has very good bat speed and always has, but has made great progress in the last six months in his approach at the plate. He really impressed the pro scouting community at the WWBA World Championships in Jupiter, Fla., last October with his power and bat speed and was really one of the best prospects at the event. I'd call him a probable second round pick right now but I could see a number of teams liking him more than that if he has a great spring."

29. Keegan Thompson, Cullman (Ala.)
RHP, 6-2, 175, R/R, Auburn
Accomplishments:
Team USA 18U Member; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; MaxPreps 2012 Underclass All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Rob Ketcham, Cullman Times (@rketcham)
"Keegan Thompson is an unshakable talent who has already proven himself at the high school level and on the world's biggest stage with USA Baseball's 16-and-under and 18U National Baseball teams. He'll blow away opponents with his pro-ready repertoire — 90-plus mph fastball, sweeping curve, slider and changeup — on the mound and then turn around and smash home runs and game-winners at the plate. Alabama's reigning Class 5A Pitcher and Player of the Year has already committed to Auburn University but is expected to be drafted early in MLB's First Year Player Draft."

Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Andrew Conrad, Baltimore Sun (@ACHoCoSports)
"McPhearson — who has been described as having 'crazy' speed — has earned a reputation as one of the fastest players in the country. With a father, Gerrick, and four older brothers who played D-I college football, his athletic pedigree is also excellent. But like any player whose skill-set is based on how fast he can cover ground, the big question mark for McPhearson is how often he can put the ball on the ground and into the gaps against elite pitching."

33. Ryder Jones, Watauga (Boone, N.C.)
SS/OF, 6-4, 195, L/R, Stanford
Accomplishments:
2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Steve Behr, Watauga Democrat
"He brings a 90-mph fastball on the mound, and a good glove at shortstop or third base when he's not pitching. A Stanford signee, Jones also brings to the plate a big bat capable of driving the ball deep."

34. Brian Navarreto, Arlington Country Day (Jacksonville, Fla.)
C, 6-4, 220, R/R
Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Perfect Game Classic All-American
Local Quote: Justin Barney, Florida Times-Union (JustinBarneyTU)
"He's a very big target behind the plate and a has the tools you look for in a high school catcher. Very good pop time (1.80) for a high school backstop, and can hit very well, although coaches mention his ability behind the plate first and foremost. Not a guy who baserunners will challenge often because of how quick he is out of his crouching position."

35. Connor Jones, Great Bridge (Chesapeake, Va.)

Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Perfect Game Classic All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Kevin Hageland, Star Local News (@kandc1053)
"Putting aside Billy’s immense talent, which includes pop in his bat, good range in the outfield and a plus arm, he is a team guy. He was a starter as a freshman for a Plano West team that made it to the state tournament and then rushed back from an arm injury as a junior to help his team, which was a fringe playoff contender at best. That attitude was evident again at Signing Day in November, as Billy brushed aside talks of going pro to instead focus on what the Wolves could accomplish this season."

39. Andy McGuire, Madison (Vienna, Va.)
SS 6-1, 190, R/R, Texas
Accomplishments:

40. Hunter Harvey, Bandys (Catawba, N.C.)
IF/RHP, 6-3, 175, R/R
Accomplishments:
Under Armour All-American; Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Cody Dalton, Observer News Enterprise
"Hunter is an old-school pitcher with baseball lineage running through his bloodlines. His father, Bryan, was a two-time All-Star relief pitcher in the majors for the California Angels and Florida Marlins while his brother, Kris, spent time in the minors with the Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations. Hunter's fastball speed has progressed by 2 mph in the past year (from touching 94 to touching 96), and he continues to develop and make strides in his off-speed pitches, including his curveball and changeup. One of eight seniors on the Bandys baseball team, Harvey should be a pivotal cog for the Trojans with not only his solid play on the mound, but his leadership as well."

41. Josh Hart, Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.)

"Longhi has mostly played first base and the outfield. I'm not sure if he has seen time on the mound. He has a good bat and good power to the alleys. He committed really early to LSU, but will probably have a decision to make if he is a high draft pick."

The third of Roger and Debbie Clemens' four boys, Kacy has pitching in his genes and name. When considering his name, his parents went with the final two letters in honor of Cy Young. "Akeem is one of the top prospects to come along from Florence in a very long time. His lanky frame and 90-plus mph fastball make him an attractive prospect for Major League scouts. I look forward to big things from him this year."

Local Quote: John Maffei, U-T San Diego
"Katoh has been a starter since he was a freshman. He has grown up and filled out. Smooth in the field, good instincts, good reflexes, limited range. Not sure if he can play shortstop beyond high school. He runs well and has surprising power. He hit a lot like Ichiro."

75. Ronnie Healy, Jupiter (Fla.)
C/OF, 6-0, 205, L/R
Accomplishments:
Area Code Games Selection; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Matt Porter, Palm Beach Post (@mattyports)
"Healy opted to leave high school in December and is instead playing a 60-game schedule and training full-time for the MLB Draft at Elev8 Sports Academy, a baseball-focused training center. He has an excellent catching build and shows good power, but his low-90s fastball makes him an intriguing relief pitching prospect."

"You can see and sense leadership, skill, desire and talent in Nunez when you watch him practice. He's a natural leader, craves competition and being a leader. He's a terrific talent. He can play any infield position, he can pitch and catch, and good luck trying to get him out at the plate. He's one of the program's all-time greats."

Accomplishments:

Local Quote: Kevin Henry, Tulsa World (@TWCorrespondent)
"I was impressed that Thomas seemed to get stronger as the game went along. His best three pitches of the night might have been to the last batter of the game. He pitched a solid game, but really seemed to zone in when he knew it was time to put the game away."

81. Tuck Neuhaus, Wharton (Tampa, Fla.)
SS, 6-3, 190, L/R, Louisville
Accomplishments:
Baseball America Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Jarrett Guthrie, Freelance (@JGuthrieTAMPA)
"Neuhaus allows his team to hope for something special out of him when it's needed. He has a rangy, tall frame, but plays a very smooth shortstop covering a lot of ground and snagging liners out of reach to most. The Louisville commit, who helped his high school reach the state playoffs for the first time last season, is a solid hitter with some power and a consistent history of coming up big in big moments."

82. Tyler Danish, Durant (Plant City, Fla.)
3B/P, 6-0, 170, R/R, Florida
Accomplishments:
2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote:
Jarrett Guthrie, Freelance (@JGuthrieTAMPA)
"Danish has spent the last year developing from a thrower to pitcher and if he was talented as a thrower, then he is becoming an expert as a pitcher. He already had a good mid-90s fastball, but he is no longer just dabbling with a solid off-speed option — something that helped him this summer as he was named MVPitcher of Perfect Game USA’s WWBA tournament. He’s a fast worker, but not a haphazard one. In his second start this season against Plant (Tampa, Fla.), which has three fellow University of Florida commits, Danish was artful in a one-hit, 12-strikeout performance. He paints well and mixes speeds, but he seems to feed off a head-to-head challenge with his fastball."

83. Riley Unroe, Desert Ridge (Mesa, Ariz.)
SS/OF, 6-0, 180, S/R, Southern California
Accomplishments:
Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Kyle Odegard, East Valley Tribune (@Kyle_Odegard)
"Riley is the son of former big-leaguer Tim Unroe and has one of the most polished bats in the state. Arizona has some top-notch shortstops but he is arguably the best of the bunch. Desert Ridge is steeped in tradition and Unroe is the latest in a long list of stars."

88. Cody Bellinger, Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.)
1B/LHP, 6-4, 180, L/L, Oregon
Accomplishments:
Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Kyle Odegard, East Valley Tribune (@Kyle_Odegard)
"I haven’t seen him too often, but from what I’ve heard, he has a very nice swing and is a natural hitter. He’s committed to Oregon and is the son of former big-leaguer Clay Bellinger. Cody will be counted on for production in the middle of the order now that last year’s star Mitch Nay (the 58th overall selection in the 2012 draft) has moved on to professional baseball. Hamilton was our preseason No. 1 team in Division I and Bellinger will be a big key in the Huskies’ aim for the title."

Local Quote: Matt Baker, Tampa Bay Times (@MattHomeTeam)
"Christian's not flashy. He doesn't stand out in any one area, but he does everything very well. There's a reason he was selected for the U-18 national team — and was named MVP of the World Baseball Championship. He was one of the most consistent players last year on a team that made the elite eight, and he's already off to a good start this spring."

92. Dylan White, Sarasota (Fla.)

Local Quote: Dennis Maffezzoli, Sarasota Herald-Tribune (@maffsports)
"He's an interesting case, since he hasn't played for a year and a month. Dylan missed all of last season with a torn labrum. He recovered and was cleared to play this season, but he dislocated his kneecap in the first classic game. His status is week-to-week, according to coach Clyde Metcalf."

Accomplishments:
MaxPreps 2012 Underclass All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Ryan Aber, The Oklahoman (@ryaber)
"Evan Anderson burst onto the scene as a sophomore, hitting three home runs in the first round of the state tournament. Since, he's lit things up with both his bat and his arm. He bounced back from a broken foot he suffered playing basketball as a junior to turn in a stellar spring season, hitting .511 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs and going 5-2 with a 1.13 ERA, striking out more than 1.5 hitters per inning."

97. Cassidy Brown, Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio)
C, 6-3, 205, R/R, Loyola Marymount
Accomplishments:
Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Michael Beaven, Akron Beacon Journal (@MBeavenABJ)
"He is a big kid at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds. He is a quality catcher and hitter at Walsh Jesuit, a high school that has produced several outstanding baseball players who have gone on to have success in college and professionally. Cassidy can hit for average and power, and he also is a good athlete behind the plate. He is a key reason why Walsh will contend for a state championship this year and garner attention from national publications. I look for Cassidy to have a solid career out in Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount University."

98. Logan Shore, Coon Rapids (Minn.)
RHP, 6-2, 185, R/R, Florida
Accomplishments:
Area Code Games Selection; Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American; MaxPreps 2012 Underclass All-American; 2012 Perfect Game Preseason All-American
Local Quote: Jason Gonzalez, Minneapolis Star Tribune (@JGonStrib)
"Logan Shore is a power pitcher with a quality sinker that makes him even more effective. His fastball is consistently in the low 90s, but a good body should allow him to improve velocity. Impressive mound presence and if-needed off-speed pitches make fastball appear even better. Shore is also a quality hitter and position player. Hits with power, but still gets a lot of singles. In the field, his strong arm allows him to play most infield and outfield positions and he is surprisingly quick on his feet. Though he shines at shortstop, first base is becoming more realistic with so much hype around his pitching."

99. Jamie Westbrook, Basha (Chandler, Ariz.)
SS, 5-11, 175, R/R, Pepperdine
Accomplishments:
Area Code Games Selection; MaxPreps 2012 Underclass All-American
Local Quote: Kyle Odegard, East Valley Tribune (@Kyle_Odegard)
"Westbrook has the frame of a middle infielder, but the pop in his bat stands out. He led all of Arizona in home runs late last season and finished with 13 in 94 at-bats. His bat speed and ability to square up good pitches makes him one of the toughest outs in the state. Westbrook seems poised for an impressive senior season as Basha aims to become an elite team in 2013."
