Basketball Recap: Cobden Falls Despite Big Games from Shawna Burgess and Natalie Franklin

Cobden was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They took a 50-39 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Murphysboro Red Devils. While the Appleknockers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Red Devils 13-6 in the first quarter.

Cobden's loss came despite strong showings from Natalie Franklin and Shawna Burgess. Franklin dropped a double-double on 15 points and 20 rebounds, while Burgess posted eight points along with 14 rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance gave Burgess a new career-high in boards.

Even though they lost, Cobden smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Cobden's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for Murphysboro, their win ended a 16-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-8.

Cobden and Century will compete for holiday cheer at 6:00 p.m. on December 19th. As for Murphysboro, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 44-43 victory against Webber on the 13th.
