Basketball Recap: Zulema Montoya Key Part of a Team Effort in Pirates Win

On Saturday, everything went the Proviso East Pirates's way against the Thornwood Thunderbirds as the Proviso East Pirates made off with a 57-33 win. With the Pirates ahead 32-11 at the half, the match was all but over already.

Proviso East's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Zulema Montoya led the charge by going 5 for 11 en route to 22 points. What's more, Montoya also posted a 56% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in November of 2023. Another player making a difference was Amyiah Dunbar, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 14 boards.

Proviso East smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 18 consecutive contests.

Proviso East's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-9. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.3 points over those games. As for Thornwood, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-25.

Looking ahead, Proviso East will host Hinsdale Central at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hinsdale Central will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Proviso East surely won't give up without a fight. As for Thornwood, they will take on Romeoville at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
